VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY

Vitamin B12 deficiencies cause damage brain and nervous system. Patients which have pernicious anemia require lifelong vitamin B12 injections and may want to consider

There are many side effects of these injections of vitamin B12. Some of are as:

Nausea, upset stomach, mild diarrhea, headache, joint pain etc.

There are other side effect of Injections which are uncommon and serious are :-

A heart palpitations, a rapid heartbeat, rapid weight gain, muscle weakness, muscle pain , muscle cramps, a feeling extreme thirst, frequent urination, leg pain a sense of confusion ,numbness, shortness of breath with mild exertion or when lying down, redness, pain or a feeling of warmth in one leg, tenderness or swelling in one leg, a red skin color on the face, a red skin color anywhere on the body ,hives, itching, skin rash etc may occur.

The two enzymatic reaction are dependent on vitamin b12 the first reaction, methylmalolonic acid is converted to succinyl1-CoA using vitamin b12 .the second reaction homocysteine is converted to methionine by using vitamin b-12 and folic acid.

The vitamin b12 deficiency based on low serum vitamin b12 level ,less than 200pg per mL, along with clinical evidence of disease.

This tells that the patients tend to present with neuropsychiatric disease in the absence of hematologic finding. and farther measurement of metabolites such as methylmalonic acid and homocysteine have been seen to be more sensitive in the vitamin b12 deficiency than measurement of serum b12 level alone. In the pernicious anemia injection is given for month to years.

The methylmalonic acid and homocysteine level diagnosis of vitamin b12 deficiency has found some surprising facts. almost 50% of patients have serum vitamin b12 level above 200pg per mL.
